Since I (Jan) enjoy analysing the way people and/ingroups behave, I took it upon myself to make up a little exercise to help everyone get on the same page regarding our concept. In my experience when working with a group of people, team members can have entirely different views and opinions of the concept at hand. This is because everyone has their own version of the concept in mind.
People can have different insights on the same things and when we are allowed to express these insights they can turn out to be valuable since every person is creative in their own way and approaches a concept from different angles. This will allow us to detect and solve problems as a group that an individual might have overlooked.
Since our project will have to be completed over the course of 9 weeks it is clear that a lot of work will need to be done. When that is the case it is important that the work that gets done gets done in an efficient way and adds to the value of the core concept. It is important that as a group we communicate and work smarter not harder.
To ensure this it is of utmost importance that everyone is on the same page regarding our core concept. To help us achieve this I asked everyone in our group to take 5 minutes and write out their version of our concept on paper. I asked them to explain the customer journey and style as they envision it.
The point of this exercise is to get everyone in our team on the same page regarding the concept and to spot any different ideas anyone might have about the concept. Once this exercise is done everyone should have been able to express their view on the concept and we have combined all those views to one final idea that everyone understands and agrees upon. This gives us the clarity and focus that we need to work more efficiently and goal orientated as a team.
This exercise was something that I wanted to implement because I enjoy analysing and improving the way people work and communicate together. I did the same thing for the project of module 5 and wanted to pick up on it. I believe that it is of major importance to create clarity when working with a group and one way to create this is to get everyone on the same page. It also works as a creative brainstorming exercise that gives everyone a chance to express themselves.
Exercise question: How do you image interacting with our concept? What do you expect?
Kaj: I think the interaction will be very minimal, since we will only have buttons and a small screen for the QR code. I was thinking about having around 20 buttons or so. Maybe the sound alone is not enough for people to figure out what kind of store/place they just clicked, so I think it would be cool if we could incorporate the sort of book thing jukeboxes sometimes have. The pages contain more information about the places.
As for the visual style I was thinking about the classic jukebox shape but with a color scheme that is a bit more pleasant for the eye. Maybe have a lot of white, purple, blue en pink colors.
Ibrahim: The jukebox is an interactive sounds map for the city. If you interact by pressing a button or doing something else, a light will go on in the 3D city maquette. A certain area or store will be lightened up. When doing that, a light of path connects with the destination. By interacting with the installation, certain sounds are coming out of it. For example playground area, do you hear kids playing. To get more information of the route, there will be QR-code displayed and a little information on screen or with voice that explains the location.
Colene: Giving passer-by a sensory-based knowledge of Enschede, through navigation to hidden treasures around the city. Through stimulating their senses through sight and sound. Our aimed feedback that the user will receive is through light and sounds they would associate with certain parts of the city or bring nostalgia memories giving the user positive associations of Enschede and the installation.
I can envision the design of the installation in two ways. The first being a more literal design associated with musical instruments or object through a musically shaped option such as a boom box or jukebox. This can relate to our aimed partner Planet of Sound. The second option is to have it more stylised, a figurative design having more focus on the map. Both options include a 3D map that I believe, will not have fine detail but enough signifiers that the users will recognize what the buildings are. It will either include a button panel or if possible have the map itself be interactive, so when the user selects a certain building or button, it will give feedback though lighting up, having a sound symbolising the building and giving the user a navigation path. Along with this, there will be a screen that could possibly give the information of the area/building that gives the user a better understanding, and a QR code that the user can scan. That gives a link which will go to google maps and give the user directions to the area.
Cedric: We are going to make a navigation jukebox. Inside the jukebox is a 3D map of the city. When you press a button on the jukebox a building on the map will light up and an audio moodboard will be heard of that place. A light will pulse from where you are to the place you presed. So you know where to go. In edision a QR-code will appear and if you scan de QR-code, you will get a route on google maps to the corresponding location.
The jukebox will focus on the hidden gems of the city.
The buttons on the jukebox will say what the place is and if you press it you will know where it is. And you might get some additional information of the place.
The idea of a modern jukebox with a futuristic vibe
Jan: I would like to find a specific location or I am interested in doing something random I have never done before. However I do not know my way around the city very well. I walk up to a machine that looks like a jukebox that has a grand amount of options for things to do organized in categories. I pick one, chilling for example and it hits up some parks and other spots that are good for walking and hanging around.I pick one park, on the physical map an area lights up in green and I hear the sound of birds chirping and leaves rustling. This sound presents me with a mood that I might want to get into, I decide that I would like to hang out in this park and notice that it is fairly close by I and scan the qr code that pops up. I get the route on google maps and walk over.
3d map of Enschede that can light up specific locations, some sort of search engine to help you find what you are looking for, sounds that accompany the locations to provide the user with a mood or feeling.
